9AM: PICK UP A COFFEE IN BALBOA PARK Hilltop Balboa Park is just north of downtown San Diego and the perfect place to get your bearings. It’s home to 16 museums and other cultural institutions. Spend the morning walking some of the 65 miles of trails with a hot lavender chai in hand from Daniel’s Coffee cart.

11AM: EXPLORE BARRIO LOGAN Barrio Logan, a neighbourhood of warehouses turned into galleries, taco joints and craft breweries, has deep Mexican and Chicano roots. This is reflected in the 80 murals splashed across the artsy district, depicting Aztec goddesses next to Frida Kahlo. Stroll the colourful streets and then swing by Bread & Salt, a former bakery turned into a community arts hub.

12PM: STOP FOR PASTA When Ciccia Osteria won a Michelin Bib Gourmand, it pinned the restaurant’s handcrafted pastas to San Diego’s culinary map. Pull up a chair here in its tranquil
courtyard, a few blocks south of Bread & Salt, to feast on pillowy ravioli stuffed with braised beef.

2PM: VISIT A VINTAGE FUNFAIR Once you’ve digested your meal, catch a taxi over to Belmont Park, a retro amusement park that’s a beloved local landmark. Take in the sweeping views of the sea from the Giant Dipper roller coaster, and pick up a fuchsia cloud of candyfloss at this park opened by a sugar magnate back in 1925.

4PM: SPOT WILDLIFE AT LA JOLLA COVE Head further up the coast to La Jolla Cove, a protected beach that’s home to rowdy sea lions, often seen sunbathing in among the craggy rocks. Beyond lies a series of sea caves explorable by kayak; look for leopard sharks and dolphins along the way.

6PM: WATCH THE SUNSET The coastal community of Ocean Beach is where San Diego lets loose its bohemian side, with thrift shops, tattoo studios and low-
key boutiques. Surfers flock to the waves of Newport Avenue Beach, where locals practice yoga on the sands. At dusk, make for Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and follow the clifftop trail for some of the best golden horizon views.
8PM: DIG INTO GOURMET TACOS Dive into the world of Mexican wrestling at the Lucha Libre restaurant in Mission Hills, part of a gourmet taco company that has two more outlets in the city. All feature kitschy interiors: think Pepto-Bismol pink walls and portraits of masked wrestlers in gilded frames. Blackened mahi burritos are sold alongside colourful máscaras (masks), for diners who really want to get into character.

10PM: SIP A CLASSIC MAI TAI Cocktail bars are king in San Diego, but for a uniquely West Coast experience, round your day off at tiki-themed False Idol. This Polynesia-inspired hangout goes all out, with elaborate wood carvings, a rocky waterfall and faux thunderstorms regularly illuminating the speakeasy.
