CLUBS
Why should people join your club? LMC is a friendly and inclusive club for those interested in hill walking, scrambling and rock climbing. Established in 1975, we welcome and encourage enthusiastic new members of all interests, ages and abilities providing a safe, friendly and social environment to develop your own skills.
How easy is it to join your club? It is easy to join Loughton Mountaineering Club. We run local walks, climbing wall meets and socials. This means prospective new members can meet us before they commit to a weekend away on the hills. Find out more on our website:

LOUGHTON MOUNTAINEERING CLUB (LMC)
A long-established club with an active and friendly membership across a wide range of ages and abilities based in Essex. The club aims to provide a friendly and enjoyable environment for everyone to actively participate in outdoor activities including mountaineering, hill walking, scrambling, rock climbing and mountain biking and meet others with similar interests. It is a small club, so you can easily get to know the regulars.
The BMC is making it easy for you to connect with friendly climbing and walking clubs in your area. Fast friends and fun- filled weekends guaranteed.
What is someone's first meet like? On your first meet, you will likely have already met members at a local event. We have a suggested kit list. As a club, we try to car share as much as possible and we cater as a group, so if you have not already met members, you will meet everyone at breakfast. We look at the weather and between us agree a plan for the day taking into account everyone’s experience, interest and kit. The group divides up to make sure that everyone can do something that they want to and is within their capabilities. In the evening we cook and eat the evening meal together, and hear about the days adventures, before planning the following day. Throughout the meet everyone mucks in to help with cooking, and tidying up.
Are they much different than what happens at a typical meet? Our club does not run novice meets, everyone is welcome at any event. We encourage all prospective new members to join us locally before they come away, so we get to meet each other and find out more about you.
What else does your club do? Locally we run regular walks round the Essex countryside and meet monthly in a local pub. Members climb at local climbing walls in London and Essex. Members have access to an email and WhatsApp group and organise ad-hoc events such as mountain biking.
Why is your club unique? We feel that our club is unique by being open and accessible to all those interested in outdoor adventures of any level, from low level walks to winter mountaineering. At weekend meets we cater together (considering dietary requirements), sitting down to eat as a group, ensuring everyone is included. Our weekend meets are affordable as the cost includes accommodation and meals. We car share which reduce costs and our impact on the environment.
How does a member progress from newbie to someone experienced enough to go out without a leader or instructor?
While LMC does not run formal training events, we direct people to the training events from organisations that can deliver a relevant course. At all our meets experienced members are willing to share their knowledge and experience with others, and support those who want to develop their skills, or work towards relevant qualifications.
What's the most exciting story from your time in the club? With such a long history, having been established in 1975, there are plenty of tales to tell and most are best left for sharing round the wood burner in the evenings on a club meet. Whilst many members have summited well known mountains in the UK and overseas, our most inspiring times can be someone’s first summit – however high.
Why do you feel clubs are important? Clubs are a great way to get to know others with shared interests and develop lifelong friendships. Clubs provide an opportunity to develop skills and have shared experiences that can push you beyond your comfort zone, within a supportive setting. Clubs are important for widening participation, for improving representation in outdoor activities and for introducing more people to the joys of the natural environment Clubs can be an affordable way to fulfil personal goals in areas of the UK you would not normally visit.
