CLIMBING

Free l to

pproaching the chain of a steep 6b sport route in Chulilla, Spain, I could feel something new taking over my mind. Pumped after climbing a 20m tufa, I knew I wasn’t going to make the clip. I knew a fall was inevitable, but I was terrified. Instead of tackling the hard moves I found myself facing a challenge

I never even realised I had – a fear of falling. During the winter of 2020, I travelled to Spain to push myself on hard routes, work my weaknesses and climb in new places. Staring up at the crag, exciting new lines with glorious and unusual features would entice me in, but my comfort zones had shrunk to the point that some days I’d struggle to even leave the ground. I realised that for two years I’d been avoiding falling off. This stemmed from two near misses early on after I started climbing, which involved being dropped off an indoor route and taking a ground fall outdoors on gritstone. This left me shaken and with the idea that falling off was dangerous, but this isn’t true.
