ost of the best climbing areas in Pembrokeshire provide nesting sites for Chough, Guillemots, Razorbills, Peregrines, and many other species who like to lay their eggs under overhangs, on ledges, or in the back of caves and cracks. So how are we permitted to climb on these cliffs when this nesting activity has legal protection? Historically, birdwatchers and conservationists noticed climbing activity near to bird nesting sites and were very concerned about actual or potential disturbance that threatened breeding success. This led to a lot of wide-ranging bans of climbing across large sections of the coast. Over the years, conservationists have studied


bird behaviour in relation to climbing activity and climbers have proactively assisted in identifying potential for disturbance. This has led to a gradual shift towards more targeted seasonal or temporary restrictions allowing a good deal of access to the cliffs while minimising disturbance. Each year the restrictions are reviewed by local climbers, the BMC and conservation bodies so that they are as relevant as possible. How can you help? Please check the RAD before visiting any crag that you don’t know well. Look for noticeboards in car parks or at abseil points, avoid the restricted parts of cliffs and help BMC volunteers by reporting new nest sites if you think there could be disturbance on un-restricted cliffs.
