ROAD TRIP

With this in mind, Adam and Brigid T

hese were questions travel bloggers Adam Rabinowitz and Brigid Prinsloo of Love Love Travel found themselves asking – and they

had an answer: they’d meander around southern Africa. The only problem? They weren’t sure their car would make it. So they contacted Toyota via

LinkedIn and sent a request: could they possibly borrow a 4x4 to help them realise their travel dream? Toyota jumped at the opportunity, viewing it as a chance to show SA just what the Land Cruiser Prado’s capable of. As Taryn George, Toyota Account Director at the company’s advertising agency, FCB, says: “Toyota knows that not all 4x4 enthusiasts want exactly the same thing. Some dream of scaling the epic desert dunes of the Kgalagadi. Others would much prefer a month-long bird- watching retreat. We wanted to show SA that, no matter what your passion, the new Land Cruiser Prado is packed with all the precision features (off road and on) you need to get exactly where you want to be.”

will be posting videos and photos on their blog as they wend their way through Zimbabwe and Botswana. Followers can look forward to seeing some of the most skin-tingling beauty on the continent – and experience more than a touch of Out of Africa envy – as the couple start their two- month odyssey. The trip kicks off at Gonarezhou in Zimbabwe, moving on to Great Zimbabwe, Harare, Mana Pools, Matusadona, the Victoria Falls, Hwange and Matopo. The two will make a fi nal stop at Bulawayo before tackling Botswana’s beauty spots: Makgadikgadi, Nxai Pans, Savuti and Linyati, ending up at Moremi in February 2018. Their arrival in Botswana in time for the legendary annual migration

SPOTLIGHT ON SPECS • The revamped Land Cruiser Prado

places far greater emphasis on safety, with the VX-L model fi tted with technologies to prevent collisions.

• The exterior’s also received an upgrade, with more modern, robust styling. Key features include changes to the bonnet and fenders to improve visibility, while the grille has also received a tweak, with headlamps and main beams repositioned to minimise damage from obstacles when driving offroad.

• Manoeuvreability has been improved too, thanks to lower corners on the front and redesigned rear bumpers, which now kick upwards.

of the herds will be a highlight of the trip, especially for Adam, who’s a photographer. The part that fi lls them with the most trepidation? “One of the fi rst camps we visit has absolutely no infrastructure – not even a toilet,” says Brigid, admitting that she’s less adventurous than her partner in travel. “We’ll be the only people there.” That said, after spending a year exploring South-East Asia together during 2016 – including living in Bali for fi ve glorious months – they’ve learnt to compromise. “Adam’s not as quick to go down dingy alleys with strangers, and I’ll take a chance and ride a scooter without a helmet,” laughs Brigid, recalling the times she did just that as the couple passed Bali rice paddies. Their diff erences aside, they agree

that nothing makes them feel quite as alive as venturing into a place where they’re unlikely to encounter any other tourists. “We visited Spain earlier this year, but it just wasn’t the same,” muses Adam. That’s probably because, for them, the thrill of travel comes from feeling entirely foreign and turning their routines upside down – a feeling they’re certain to experience as they immerse themselves in Africa’s remote splendour.
