HARD WORK BEARS
SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE ROBOTS A world where robots co-exist harmoniously with humans and help to make our
lives easier is the vision of a joint project between Toyota and the NTT Group
Their joint research will develop robots to help with housework, nursing and child-raising, or to act as partners to communicate with the lonely. NTT’s artificial intelligence and
voice recognition technologies will enable the robots to understand words, expressions and discussions that feature hand and body gestures. Synthetic voice technologies will enable natural language dialogue between humans
and robots. Toyota’s Human Support Robot
(HSR) technologies will give them the ability to pick up objects, retrieve objects out of reach to human beings and communicate with caregivers. The companies visualise a world in which partner robots are intelligent, gentle and able to get close to humans in order to encourage our activities.
Strauss won the Agri SA Toyota Young Farmer contest and Myburg won the New Harvest of the Year award run by Agri SA and Toyota SA Motors (TSAM). “Toyota SA’s roots are firmly in the agricultural industry and these awards are our way of saying ‘thank you’ for the continued support,” says Leon Theron, TSAM’s Vice-President: Sales & Dealer Network. Strauss has been farming for 18 years
in the Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme in the Northern Cape. Judges praised him as innovative, knowledgeable and continuously seeking methods to improve yields and reduce costs. Myburg, who farms apples and
pears in Vyeboom in the Western Cape, overcame poor yields, inferior-quality fruit and poor productivity by investing in irrigation systems and sound soil conservation, while addressing social ills in his local community.
SETTING THE GOLD STANDARD Toyota took the overall Gold Award at the Manufacturer of the Year (MOTY) awards
In October, the Southern African Vehicle Rental & Leasing Association (SAVRALA) held its annual gala dinner, where the category winners were announced – and Toyota dominated the Leasing section. “The MOTY awards again recognise those manufacturers who continue to
understand the evolving needs of both car rental and leasing fleet owners,” says SAVRALA President Winston Guriah. SAVRALA members manage more than 70 000 vehicles and the association’s
leasing members account for more than 55 000 owned/funded and 245 000 managed vehicles per annum in SA. Other accolades on the night included Best Leasing Account Executive, which was
awarded to Faan Fourie from Toyota, while Ramatjitla Penyane, also from Toyota, was voted Best Technical Representative to the Leasing Industry.
