a pickle


How do you go about saving 1,3 million lives per year? That global statistic could be removed entirely by achieving Toyota’s goal of zero accidents with new technologies that prevent cars from crashing. Experts at the Toyota Research Institute are steering Toyota’s automated driving capabilities towards not only saving lives, but expanding access to mobility and making driving more fun and convenient, says its CEO, Dr Gill Pratt. Interactions between drivers and cars should mirror those of close friends who help each other out, so the intelligent car’s both a chauffeur and a guardian. The Guardian system can spot distracted or drowsy driving and intervene if the driver doesn’t react to turns in the road by using the brakes and steering functions. If the system detects drowsiness, it can verbally ask the driver pull over, or navigate the car to a coffee shop. For Toyota, the relationship between cars and people is fundamental


to everything it does, including research into automated vehicles. It uses the word “teammate” to describe the concept of automated driving. Two vehicle systems called Highway Teammate and Urban Teammate are both planned for commercial availability in the 2020s.
