monopoly on the U.S. military bases, the Air Force is as much a part of the state’s culture as copper mines, cowboys and ghost towns. Located in Phoenix, Arizona, Luke AFB is the headquarters of the 56th Fighter Wing, the largest fighter wing in the U.S. Air Force, which has a total economic impact on the state of $2.4 Billion. Employing more than 1,200 civilians, the base addresses the needs of over 4,800 active-duty personnel and over 1,400 reserves. The base is named for the WWI

flying ace and Phoenix native Lieutenant Frank Luke Jr., the first aviator to receive the Medal of Honor. Lt. Luke scored 18 aerial victories, 14 against German observation balloons, before being killed at the age of 21 on Sept. 29, 1918. Today, the mission of the 56th
Fighter Wing is to “train the world’s greatest fighter pilots and combat-ready Airmen”, and their vision is to be “the epicenter of power… the proving ground for how we train, team and think to win tomorrow’s fight.” Partnered with Italy, Netherlands,
Norway, Singapore and Denmark, Luke trains 105 F-35 and 188 F-16 pilots, 79 intel specialists, 98 F-35 maintainers, 8 medical lab technicians, 16 Critical Care/Emergency Trauma Fellowships and 236 Air Control Squadron personnel on an annual basis. Putting this into perspective, it is important to note that Luke trains 75% of the world’s F-35 pilots, and since 1941, Luke has graduated over 61,000 pilots.
The tour will be conducted on the
afternoon of Wed., October 5, and is open to all event delegates and their guests. Non-U.S. citizens wishing to tour the facility must notify Barbara Tiseo (
btiseo@investmentcasting.org) of their interest no later than August 15. The Investment Casting Institute is
grateful to all of the men and women who have served and are currently serving this country. We are especially appreciative to be given this opportunity to tour Luke Air Force Base and invite you to join us.
