SPEAKER ROUNDUP INVESTMENT
CASTING 15th WCIC 2022
Welcome to the PreShow Issue T
echnical papers and presentations from over 27 leading voices in investment casting will be featured
at the Investment Casting Institute’s 15th World Conference & Exposition, August 21-24, in Anaheim, California. Motivational speaker, Jeff Skiles will
give the keynote address. When you’re a pilot and both your engines fail over the largest city in America, you must act quickly and independently, but you must also trust in the system that has trained you and prepared you to handle such crisis moments. Jeff Skiles’ story of the “Miracle on the Hudson” would not have the perfect ending if not for years of training and preparation that allowed the two pilots to understand exactly what the other was doing – thus maximizing their time, communication, and effectiveness.
Don’t miss this inspiring presentation. In addition to a diverse variety of
technical papers addressing all aspects of the investment casting process, this year’s speakers will present a variety of topics, including a review of the major markets for investment castings, industry megatrends, meeting the challenges of today’s industry and enablers for driving forward a world class foundry. Additionally, the ICI’s Process Control Standards program will be rolled out to the international community. The awards portion of the technical
conference will begin with the Member Emeritus induction ceremony, recognizing retirees whose ongoing volunteerism benefit the ICI and the industry. Several of the industry’s top students will receive the ICI Intern
Scholarship Award, and our foundries will be recognized through our annual Casting Contest and the Innovator of the Year recognition. After the conference, the expo
will host more than ninety exhibitors, displaying the latest industry products and services. The Casting Contest winners will
also be on display at the expo. The contest illustrates the benefits of the investment casting process and recognizes castings which best demonstrate the benefits of investment casting or which stretch the technology envelope. The Institute wishes to thank this
year’s speakers for their contributions. Their biographies are listed on the following pages. Speakers are listed in random order.
Keynote Address: Lessons from The Miracle on the Hudson Keynote Speaker: Jeff Skiles, Co-Pilot US Airways Flight 1549
On a bright, 20-degree afternoon in January,
US Airways Flight 1549 accelerated down New York La Guardia Airport’s main runway, loaded with 155 passengers and crew, headed skywards for Charlotte, NC. Everything was normal until First Officer Jeff Skiles spotted a formation of Canada geese almost directly ahead. In a matter of seconds, he heard numerous thunks as the birds impacted the aircraft. Both engines immediately failed. Captain Chesley Sullenberger took over flying the plane and lowered the nose down to retain airspeed. Within seconds, the pilots made the

decision that returning to LaGuardia was simply not possible—they’d have to fly over densely populated areas and there was no guarantee that they’d make it. Surrounded by nothing but skyscrapers and neighborhoods, they decided to head to the only open, flat space available— the Hudson River. Exclusively represented by Leading Authorities speakers bureau, Jeff Skiles details the lessons, training, and scenarios that led to the “Miracle on the Hudson” and what businesses can take away from it with a great sense of humor and natural storytelling ability.
