INTREPID AUTOMATION Rapid Turnaround for Casting Patterns

Intrepid Automation develops custom, end-to-end 3D print solutions for Digital Casting.

Why use Digital Casting Patterns? • • • •

Allows for quick/last minute changes in designs. Ability to iterate with minimal tooling.

Enables production of parts while waiting for tooling.

Makes non-conventional or challenging casting geometries possible.

Digital Patterns are cheaper/faster with Intrepid’s proprietary technologies.

Why Intrepid?

Our leading-edge DLP technology and antimony-free materials can produce stable, accurate, smooth-finish 3D printed patterns at world-class speeds compared to existing SLA and wax technologies. We integrate with customers’ existing software

COVESTRO

Covestro Additive Manufacturing (AM) has put itself on a mission to unlock the full potential of 3D printing/AM by increasing the number of materials to meet high-performance requirements. We work with foundries, service bureaus and other producers

of investment casting and other producers in the investment casting value chain to bring them affordable, timesaving alternatives to traditional production.

From printing to finishing, additive manufacturing technology offers overall efficiency versus traditional production including cost savings and faster lead times without degrading part properties. Waiting weeks for metal tooling is no longer needed with 3D printing. Specialized equipment and tooling costs for wax pattern production are eliminated. Storage of metal tools is avoided. Production on demand also means decreasing transport, shipping costs and time. Less material is needed as only the material to produce patterns and other applications is used. Complex and intricate patterns are possible so engineers can optimize the cast for the part rather than for the mold-making process. And the ability to quickly print and test multiple design variations is easier to accomplish compared with traditional manufacturing.

Covestro Additive Manufacturing developed a new material specifically for 3D printing investment casting patterns. Somos® WaterShed AF is a multi-purpose stereolithography resin that is compatible with many types of high performance metals such as

nickel-based super alloys, including aluminum and titanium, as it does not contain any detectable levels of antimony (as per ICP- AES test methodology).

Patterns created with Somos® WaterShed AF leave minimal

amounts of residuel ash after pattern burnout, reducing shell clean-out and speeding up mold production. This minimizes the possibility of ash formed imperfections appearing on the cast part, requiring less rework to finish the part. The material creates accurate, complex patterns, is easy to process and offers high dimensional stability (high humidity resistance) and excellent surface finish.
