In more than two decades of writing about the travel trade, the subject of attracting and retaining young talent has been a perennial point of discussion. This week, the topic was again debated on social media, with a number of bosses bemoaning the lack of good recruits and an inability to fill what on paper should be attractive positions (page 4). It isn’t clear what the barriers are in each individual case, but
recruitment experts suggest it is a buyer’s market in which the number of vacancies outweighs the number of applicants, meaning the latter have plenty of scope to pick and choose. In this sort of market, even more pressure is placed on the recruiting company to ensure their business, culture and the opportunities they
offer really stand out from the crowd. But there is also a need for the sector as a whole to send a message that it is an exciting, dynamic place – and one not just to dip your toe into the world of work, but to build a long and happy career. At Travel Weekly, we teamed up with Abta and a range of amazing employers in the travel
industry to launch our annual prospectus-style magazine Take Off in Travel, with the aim of doing just that, and we look forward to unveiling the eighth edition this autumn. But even a fantastic magazine like Take Off can only reach so many people, which is why all travel companies have a collective part to play to showcase the best of our industry and ensure its future health.
