Qatar is perfect for families. Despite a relatively small surface area - around half the
size of Wales – it is packed with activities and is easy to explore, making it an ideal stopover on long-haul flights to the Indian Ocean, Asia, Africa and Australasia. To make a stopover even easier, British passport holders can now obtain a free 30-day visa waiver on arrival in Qatar.
The capital Doha is home to an exciting array of big name hotels set right on the beach, and Qatar’s natural playgrounds lie within easy reach of the city. A morning or full day can be spent exploring the sun-
baked desert landscape. Sturdy 4x4s offer a thrilling desert safari adventure while a trek on a sedate camel can feel like stepping back in time. The glinting Khor Al Adaid is a truly unique sight. An inland sea that has crept into the heart of the desert, it is surrounded by golden dunes and white sands, creating an unexpected body of water in the middle of an arid landscape. A visit can be combined with a traditional lunch in a Bedouin-style camp. Less than an hour north of Doha, the landscape changes
dramatically. The Al Thakira mangroves edge the coastline to create a green reserve filled with birdlife, from migrating flamingos to herons. Canoe trips offer a fun way to explore the waterways, paddling amongst the eerie mangrove tree roots emerging from the water and even stopping for a sunset barbecue on the shores.
Back in the capital, there is plenty to explore. In the
evenings the traditional market Souq Waqif comes alive. Its narrow alleys fill with locals and visitors haggling for bargains among the stores selling perfumes, silks, jewellery and traditional handicrafts, while live music and traditional
