INDIA EXPANDS ITS PLACE IN THE TOURISM WORLD
The year comes to close on the back of several high-profile tourism initiatives aimed at forging ever-closer ties with countries where there are already strong tourism links. Vistara, for example, announced it is adding a fourth international destination to its expanding network with a four-days- a-week direct service from Mumbai to Colombo, Sri Lanka. The airline is using A320neo aircraft with a three-class cabin
configuration, which makes it the first to offer the choice of Premium Economy class for travel on the India-Sri Lanka route, in addition to Economy and Business Class. And the low-cost AirAsia India announced services to Goa and Chennai from Mumbai while also increasing frequency between Mumbai-New Delhi to four times daily. E-tourist visa rules were recently relaxed for Chinese nationals, following
a leadership summit where an agreement was reached to build on the growing tourism trade between the two countries. Since October, Chinese travellers have been able to apply for five-year visas with multiple entries. Israel brought a roadshow to Hyderabad to enhance commercial ties.
In an effort to retain the growth momentum of Indian arrivals there, the team met more than 50 key travel and tour operators, MICE providers and upmarket leisure operators. The roadshow included interactive B2B sessions, education programmes and workshops to help trade members plan itineraries and respond to customer queries. New Zealand’s Auckland Airport led a tourism delegation to India to
promote links with what it described as one of the world’s most promising high-value visitor markets. Each year, New Zealand receives more than 65,000 visitors from India, with those on holiday staying an average of 20 days – seven days longer than the average tourist – and frequently arriving during the quieter months of Spring and Autumn. |

SUBSIDIES SET TO DRIVE STATE’S HOLISTIC GROWTH
A new policy aimed at promoting holistic tourism has been approved in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Supporting this will be capital investment subsidies of five-15 per cent for projects that revitalise underdeveloped areas by building roads and adding facilities such as drinking water supplies. The policy will have special focus on eco and agro-organic
tourism and those that specialise in specific themes, such as snow, lake, adventure, pilgrimage, cultural and wellness. The policy’s main objectives are to promote diversification through such theme-based developments, to safeguard state’s tourism destinations through sustainable interventions, to ensure sustainable tourism primarily benefits host communities and to provide safe, secure and unique ‘tourism for all’. The area is already home to attractions such as Shimla,
Mandi, Chamba, Dharamshala, Kangra Manali and Dalhousie, and well known for activities such as trekking, skiing, river rafting, skiing, ice skating and paragliding. |
