n 2011 Subhash Goyal gave a vote of thanks at what was a dazzling inaugural session to mark the expo’s 18th year. The
industry veteran looked back over two decades, noted its growing numbers, its increased participation - and how it had grown from humble beginnings to become a major platform for the promotion of Indian tourism. He told the crowd: “18 years ago
some of us joined hands. The idea was very sketchy – to do something to promote tourism. Since then, however, the event has taken giant strides. It has, in fact, become a revolution.” If he’d had a crystal ball he would
have known then that, as South Asia’s premier travel event looks ahead to closing its third decade, just what a revolution it would turn out to be. By 2012 it was attracting more than
550 exhibitors from 33 countries and 23 Indian states. It was noted for the

involvement of 6,249 unique and qualified buyers and sellers, a number which represented year-on-year growth of 6.7 per cent. The exhibition was spread over 5,395
square metres - a growth of more than 15 per cent and making it one of the biggest travel shows in Asia. It also saw first-time participation from
exhibitors representing 35 countries and 23 Indian states and attracting buyers from 35 countries and more than 70 Indian cities. That year was also significant for
several major announcements. One of them was a memorandum of understanding between VisitBritain of the UK and Indian Trade Associations.

having welcomed 7,419 such buyers and 590 exhibitors from 35 countries and 23 Indian states. By that time it had grown from one and half pavilions to 10,000 square metres. The following year saw a rise to more than 640
And then there was the launch of Maharashtra Tourism Diamond Alliance which brought together major players in India, Canada and Japan. New additions included Singapore,
Zambia, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Armenia, and Australia’s Gold Coast, while the USA, Kenya, Nepal, Bhutan, Turkey and Seychelles increased their presence. More than 12,000 visitors - an
