FEATURE | ON THE MOVE

EXHIBITOR FOCUS

The challenges of designing for discerning passengers in moving environments will be one of the features of the mobile spaces material hub in the Textiles & Machinery section

F 96

urnishing a cruise liner presents challenges that go far beyond those normally experienced by the hospitality sector. Not only does it involve blending corporate identity with passenger expectations but compliance with a whole range of ship-specifi c safety issues. Unlike hotels, for example, carpets are subject to exacting technical requirements on fi re safety and are expected to contribute to a better room climate by minimising odours and improving acoustics in what are generally small spaces. There’s also a stronger emphasis on lighting functionality and the multi-functional and “convertibility” as wall-beds have to combine sleeping, sitting and storage capabilities. The potential for such innovation will be demonstrated at interzum by a group of Furniture Club members will furnish a model cruise ship cabin on the mobile spaces piazza for the benefi t of visitors from, not only the cruise industry, but the automotive and aviation industries as well. Travellers these days expect to fi nd the same level of comfort and the same functionalities when travelling as they do when standing still; be they travelling by sea, air or rail.

In all sectors, the focus on travel comfort is intensifying. Many innovations are already established in aircraft cabins: in-fl ight entertainment (IFE), wireless functionality, lighting scenarios to foster well-being and lie-fl at seating on long- haul fl ights in the higher travel classes are standard. The cruise business, in particular, is booming and cabins have had to evolve to meet rising passenger expectation with major lines introducing everything from inter-connecting rooms to spacious two-tier apartments. The Mobile Spaces material hub in the centre of the piazza will look even further ahead into the future. The world of materials, as the link that joins, will be presented by KHALIL design – a company whose portfolio

includes Daimler, Pilatus Aircraft and Nike. They will present an outlook for materials and the language of form that will set the industry’s future direction.
