For textiles, the future is Smart as manufacturers increasingly look to innovations in technical materials. But what does this mean for the industry? Sabine Gimpel ponders the future


Smart textiles are opening up new possibilities in furniture construction and automotive engineering. At the forefront of such innovation is The Institute for Special Textiles and Flexible Materials (titv), a think-tank for these kinds of new textile applications. This close-to-


market research organisation partners many fi rms along the textile value chain in research, development, service, consulting, testing and professional training. More than 50 employees develop high-tech solutions alongside classic textile technology as the basis for new materials. Their research expertise extends further into medical engineering, physics, electrical engineering and chemistry and includes a number of close networks with universities and institutes. The sustainability of Germany’s textile industry is increasingly determined by the level of innovation in the subject and the growing complexity demands ever- closer co-operation with other areas of industry. Someone who knows all about


this is their Head of Research Marketing, Sabine Gimpel. She was interviewed recently by interzum and asked for her views on the latest developments and future prospects in smart textiles. We reproduce that here:

INTERZUM: Ms Gimpel, the titv Greiz conducts research with interdisciplinary teams on textile innovations. What key new developments are you seeing? SG: Textile companies in Germany are now increasingly concentrating on technical textiles. There’s also now a stronger focus on smart textiles. At the titv Greiz, we mainly work on the development of electrically conductive textiles and special surface treatments and their applications – such as luminous, sensory or heating textiles. In our research fi elds of smart textiles, functional surfaces and fl exible materials, innovations are being developed for applications at all textile processing stages and for sectors such as automotive engineering and wellness.
