Hotels are plentiful in Cologne as are the range of options, from the luxurious to highly reasonable budget rooms. But do be aware that, since 2014, Cologne has been raising a culture tax of fi ve per cent on hotel stays. It applies to the room rate only though, not breakfast and other services, and it has to be paid at the hotel.
The good news is that business travellers can claim exemption if they completed the necessary forms and produce employer certifi cation which states that the stay “is strictly necessary for business reasons”. Municipal authorities insist that documents that don’t include that exact phrase will not be valid. And the documentation is in German with no translations available.
