Product design
A question has come up on product design in nine of the last ten years. A wide range of products, from toys to mobile phone cases, can be examined in this question.
This is usually a two-part question. You must answer (a) and (b).
* In part (a) you are often asked to describe and discuss the product under headings.
Overall design, safety, materials, colour, texture, function, form and shape have all been included.
* Part (b) can ask you to design something and to give reasons for your design.
Graphic design
There has been a question on graphic design in nine of the last ten years. Posters come up most often, but package design, T-shirts and other forms of advertising also appear.
This is usually a two-part question. You must answer (a) and (b).
* In part (a) you describe and discuss the design using headings. Imagery, composition, colour,
shape, form, lettering and logo have all been used in recent years.
* In part (b) you can be asked to design a poster, logo or some other graphic on a
suggested theme. Film and TV
A question has been offered on film or TV in eight of the last ten years. Sometimes a theme like action or drama is offered to base your answer on. You can also be offered a free choice of film or TV series to choose from.
This is usually a two-part question. You must answer (a) and (b).

* In part (a) you describe and discuss the film or TV programme under headings. Costumes,
make-up, camera work, special effects, location and sets can be offered to help you frame your answer.
* In part (b) you might be asked to describe one scene or to offer ideas for a film or TV
programme of your own. Examiners have also looked for storyboards and ideas for TV ads.
Architecture and the environment
There has been a question on architecture and the environment in eight of the last ten years. This is a loose heading to group together topics like designing a children’s playground, shop fronts, and upcycling second-hand materials into useful furniture or equipment.
This is usually a two-part question. You must answer (a) and (b).
* Part (a) asks you to describe and discuss the topic or illustration. Headings are given, but
these vary so much that it would be pointless to give examples here.
* In part (b) you can be asked to design something based on the question or to look at
safety features. Public art
There has been a question on public art in six of the last ten years.
In recent years it has frequently been a two-part illustrated question. You must answer (a) and (b).
* In part (a) you are asked to describe and discuss the work of public art using the
headings given. The location, size, shape/ form, colour, texture and its relationship to the environment have been given as points to help you form an answer.
