10 years. The examiner has looked for an account of the work of a curator, the layout, lighting and the information available on site and online.

You are frequently asked to give an account of two named works by named artists from the exhibition.

A second part of the question will often ask you to make your own plan for a suggested exhibition.

Film

There has been a question on film in eight of the last ten years. The question often opens with a statement about film and asks you to name a film and discuss it under a number of headings. The work of the director, set design, location, costumes, make-up, lighting, colour, sound, camerawork and special effects are some of the aspects of filmmaking that have been asked about.

A second part of the question often asks you for your own ideas on a film that you might make. Sometimes a title or a subject is offered for the student film.

Graphic design

There has been a question on graphic design in seven of the last ten years. Posters, packaging and book covers are the choices that turn up most frequently.

Some questions have an opening statement, but many are illustrated and you are asked to comment, frequently using headings. Design concept, art elements, imagery, composition, layout, branding, colour, typography and shape have been included over the years.

A second part to the question often asks you to come up with your own design ideas on a related topic.

Architecture and the environment

There has been a question on architecture and the environment in seven of the last ten years. Fitting buildings, in a successful way, into rural or urban environments is often the theme of the question. Restorations or changes of use for old buildings have also been asked about. Illustrations can be used.

Headings like scale, materials, site, colour/finish, exterior/interior features, landscape and impact on the environment have been suggested for the structure of the answer.

In a second part to the question, you can be asked to make your own suggestions for a similar project.

Product design

This was not asked about in the four years leading up to 2016, but it was asked in five of the previous ten years. Questions ranged from furniture and household equipment to coins and machinery.

Public art, sculptures, murals

This topic has come up in four of the last ten years. Opening statements and, sometimes, illustrations are offered for discussion. Headings like scale, materials, technique, colour/finish, context, visual impact and imagery have been suggested to structure the answer.

A second part of the question can give you a chance to make design suggestions for a similar project.

Interior design

There has been a question on interior design in three of the last ten years. An opening statement and sometimes an illustration give you a chance to discuss the topic under headings. Function, space, layout, colour, textures and patterns can be among the headings offered.
