We use did for negatives and questions in the past simple. For negatives we use did not and a verb. Example People didn’t (did not) have much food after the war.
We use did and a verb to make questions. Examples A Did people travel by bullet train? B Yes, they did./No they didn’t.
When did the bullet train service start?
We use the past simple of be to make negatives and questions. Examples Life wasn’t (was not) easy after the war. People weren’t (were not) well off in the 1950s. Was life easy in the 1950s? Yes, it was./No, it wasn’t. Were people happy? Yes, they were./No, they weren’t.
