Malala Yousafzai (1997-)
Malala Yousafzai was always interested in politics. She gave her first speech in 2008 when she was 11 years old. She was angry because girls weren’t allowed to go to school in her part of Pakistan. Instead, her father taught her.
In 2009, Malala started a blog for the BBC about life in Pakistan. She wrote about the problems girls have in her part of the country. The BBC didn’t use Malala’s real name because they thought it was dangerous. But some people in Pakistan knew Malala was the writer.
In 2012, Malala was on a bus when a gunman walked on and asked ‘Which one of you is Malala?’ Then he shot Malala. She was very badly injured, but she didn’t die. People around the world were very sad and angry. There were a lot of offers to help Malala from hospitals in different countries.
On 12th July 2013, Malala gave a speech to the United
Nations. Her speech was about education and peace. She told world leaders ‘Our books and our pens are the most powerful weapons’. She believes peace is only possible when girls get an education as well as boys.
On 12th July 2015, she opened a school for Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
