10C Nobel Peace Prize Winner 2006: Muhammad Yunus

(1940-) Muhammad Yunus studied Economics at Dhaka University in Bangladesh and became a lecturer in 1961. In 1976, he visited some poor families in a village and he noticed that all the women had a similar problem. They needed money, but the banks didn’t lend them anything. The banks didn’t think the women could pay the money back. So Muhammad lent a total of $27 to 42 women and they paid him the money back later. He borrowed money from the Bangladeshi government and started a bank called the Grameen Bank. His bank was different to other banks because it lent small amounts of money to poor people. The Grameen Bank became very popular and, in 2011, it had 4.8 million users. Ninety-seven per cent of these were women. Muhammad Yunus won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 because the Nobel committee believes that we need to reduce poverty to find peace.
