FOCUS Grammar Modals: can, must, need to, should
We use can to say something is possible or to describe ability. Examples You can go to the gym to improve your fitness. (It’s possible to do this.) Good athletes can learn from their mistakes. (They have the ability to do this.)
We use must and need to to say something is necessary or really important. Examples You must train hard to improve your fitness. Athletes need to do regular practice.
We use should to say something is a good idea. Example You should plan your training carefully.
With can, must and should, we put not between the modal and the verb to make a negative. Example You can’t (cannot) climb the mountain without a guide.
