49 DISCOVER TORBAY

Torbay, also known as the English Riviera, is a 22 mile stretch of coast which includes the seaside towns of Brixham, Paignton and Torquay. It became a popular destination for the Victorians who enjoyed the sub-tropical plants, sea air and scenic waterfronts. Nowadays, people still flock to the award winning, family-friendly beaches each summer to enjoy walks along the promenade, ice creams on the pier and donkey rides on the green.

Torquay

Where to Eat Hailed as England’s Seafood Coast, fresh fish is always on the menu in Torbay and you can enjoy award winning fish and chips in Brixham, the home of England’s largest fish market. Torbay is full of bistros, beach bars, pubs and cocktail bars as well as a Michelin star restaurant serving the best of local food.

Torbay has all the benefits of a modern day town with shopping centres, leisure facilities, multiplex cinema, The Princess Theatre and numerous family attractions. Search for rhinos, gorillas and crocodiles in the award- winning Paignton Zoo or travel the English Riviera Wheel for a birds-eye view of the English Riviera overlooking Torquay Harbour from 100 feet above The Princess Gardens. The Waves Leisure Pool offers great fun for all the family with a wave machine, flume, water activity centre, sloping access and the water heated to a lovely 30 degrees! Or you could step into the Stone Age in Kents Cavern in Torquay with its spectacular and extensive labyrinth of caves. Designated a UNESCO Global Geopark the English Riviera rates as one of the Earth’s extraordinary places with dramatic scenery, incredible local geology and rich cultural heritage. Let the young explore in the Paignton Geoplay Park or leap around the limestone cliffs on an exhilarating coasteering tour.

Brixham

BRIXHAM Life in Brixham centres around the harbour and fishing is still a key part of the town’s economy. At Berry Head there’s a National Nature Reserve which is home to 200 bird varieties and a small colony of greater horseshoe bats.

What to do Get up early for a famous fish market tour, they usually start at 6am and end with a delicious fisherman’s breakfast. Step back in time aboard The Golden Hind - a full sized replica of Sir Francis Drake’s Tudor Galleon (open spring to autumn).

Where to eat

If in Brixham it seems rude not to try a little seafood! Some of the best is found at Rockfish near the fish market - the restaurant overlooks the boats arriving with their catch! For an alternative to fish try the Curious Kitchen or Port Espresso which are popular trendy breakfast spots for locals. If visiting Berry Head to look

at the birds, possibly dolphins and the great views across Torbay, then enjoy a breakfast/ light lunch/cream tea at the nearby clifftop Guardhouse Café.
