Stoke Fleming Just along the coast from Dartmouth, this pretty village can be reached by foot, car or bus. There’s a pub called The Green Dragon, the Kendricks Garden KItchen and a charming village post office selling everything from inflatables for the beach to toilet rolls. The popular beach Blackpool Sands is just a two minute drive from the centre.
Blackawton Situated between Dartmouth and Totnes, this pretty village is host to the annual Wormcharming Festival celebrated in May and a great family day out. Its village pub is the George Inn. The Woodlands Family Theme Park is close by on the main Dartmouth - Totnes A3122 as is the Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa on the opposite side. The Sportsmans Arms pub and Gardentime Garden Centre Café are approx 1.5 miles away on the same road towards Dartmouth and the Fast Rabbit Farm Gardens are hidden in 43 acres of the secluded Strawberry Valley a little closer to Dartmouth.
Bigbury A 45 minute drive away - Bigbury is well worth a visit. People come here mainly to play on the gorgeous sandy beaches and walk to the famous Burgh Island. Many time their visit to be sure of a ride to the island on the vintage sea tractor (when the tide is in). The inspiration for two Agatha Christie crime novels, the island is home to an elegant art deco hotel which has welcomed celebrities including Winston Churchill and Noel Coward.
Hope Cove Once a haven for smugglers, the pretty fishing village of Hope Cove is actually made up of two smaller villages, Outer and Inner Hope. Outer Hope has a small harbour tucked away behind the rocks, it’s peppered with delightful thatched cottages and a popular pub. There are plenty of sandy beaches so come equipped with a bucket and spade.
Bantham A mecca for surfers, this long sandy beach has fabulous rolling waves, sand dunes and super views back across to Bigbury and Burgh Island. (Bantham Surf Academy offer surfing lessons) There’s a pub in the village perfect for a rest and a pint and a Gastrobus parks up near the water to serve gourmet burgers and pizzas to hungry beach goers.
Thurlestone Thurlestone is a charming coastal village near Kingsbridge. There’s plenty to do with sandy beaches, a popular hotel and a golf course. Take time to wander through the main streets with thatched cottages dating back to the 17th century. The village gets its name from the Thurlestone Rock or “thirled stone” - the arch shaped rock formation just off the main beach.
