Dartmouth Museum has always been the best place to help you understand the town’s development over time and how it’s contributed to our nation’s history, but now there’s even more to see! Over the last 3 years, Dartmouth Museum has almost doubled its exhibition space, and 2024 sees a new display to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D Day.
Charles II was entertained in the King’s Room in 1671, and the richly decorated ceiling dates from the 1640s. The displays focus on Dartmouth’s maritime heritage, through an extensive collection of model ships and original paintings, covering ships from 1147-1950.

The story of 3 men and their contribution to D-Day is told and illustrated through their uniforms, medals and family mementoes. You can also watch wartime footage showing the preparations for D-Day and the training of over 30,000 service men and women in Dartmouth and surrounding villages. A 3D diorama of the harbour shows how some of the 485 ships in the landings were moored in the Dart.

Two new exhibitions show aspects of Dartmouth life and its people from the 17th
replica model of the ship, built in 2021 by Dartmouth craftsmen and women, and shows life on board for the passengers and crew. A short film explains what drove the Pilgrims to leave Europe for a new life in America, and a large-scale painting of Dartmouth shows what it was like to live here when the Mayflower and Speedwell sheltered in Warfleet in 1620.

The Mayflow Tomas Newcomen - world’s first commercial steam engine
Thomas Newcomen, the Dartmouth ironmonger designed and built the world’s first commercial steam engine 90 years later in 1712. A new exhibition and video tells the story of his life, while the world-class collection of 8 working models brings Newcomen’s engine to life and shows how other engineers developed his “atmospheric concept”, through the rest of the 18th
coal-powered steam on the river Dart and the lives of Dartmothians is described in the Newcomen Legacy room.
William Henley was a Dartmouth Ironmonger and self-taught scientist. His drawings, photographs and collections take you back to Victorian times with a series of interactive displays that children especially enjoy.
Dartmouth Museum – children go free!
The Museum is great for children – and they get in free! There are 2 age-appropriate quizzes for each room, and the detailed models on a variety of topics enable them to see how things were and how they worked. In the William Henley room, children can immerse themselves in the life of this Dartmouth ironmonger and scientist: see his collections of shells, insects and his paintings of Dartmouth in the late 1800s.
