THE BRITANNIA ROYAL NAVAL COLLEGE
The Royal Navy has had a link with Dartmouth since 1863 when young cadets were taught on the training hulks Britannia and Hindostan which were moored on the river. The Britannia Royal Naval College we see perched on the hill today was built a little later in 1905. It is the only remaining naval college in the country and accepts men and women from all over the world who come to Dartmouth for their initial naval officer training. The working college has a rich history standing strong through two world wars and it was there, in 1939, that a young Prince Philip first met Princess Elizabeth. Since then, other generations of the royal family have trained here including Prince William. There are some college traditions which haven’t changed in the past 100 years; everyone has to salute or come to attention when they enter the historic quarterdeck (main hall) and cadets in their first stage of training have to march through the corridors. Public tours usually take place throughout the year. Visitors are shown a glimpse of life behind the famous front doors, including the elegant chapel, busy dining room, senior gun room and Britannia Heritage Museum. Check online -
