own two labradors. In 2019 they expanded their covered shop and plant area, rivalling national chains with an impressive selection of plants, from classic perennials to exotic varieties. Chris emphasises, “Gardening will always be at the core of our business. Our point of difference is our knowledge and access to the very best plants.” The couple’s commitment has been evident even in the face of challenges. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in spring 2020, Gardentime swiftly adapted to offer a click-and-collect service during what is typically the peak season for garden centres. However, the initial days were far from idyllic. Chris reflects, “The first few weeks were horrendous-we had stock that we had to keep alive or bin.” The situation improved as restrictions eased and they soon found themselves overwhelmed with demand. Chris shares, “We couldn’t sell fast enough-suddenly, everyone wanted to garden.” This surge of interest during the
pandemic brought in a younger demographic, a welcomed sight. Philly observes, “It’s lovely to see families coming in with excitable little ones.” However, they are mindful of living costs and strive to remain accessible. To mark the 20th anniversary
and to support customers, they introduced the Garden Club Loyalty Card, which rewards with points for every purchase and also gives access to expert tips, fostering a sense of community. “We’ve worked a lot with local charities, schools, and care homes - community is king for us” added Chris. The couple’s grounded nature
is evident day to day - delivering compost in their jolly green van to potting hanging baskets at local pubs. Chris summarises their ethos: “Our daily focus is to keep our community happy.” Looking ahead, they’re in the planning stages of an exciting expansion, including a larger covered space, an expanded cafe and farm shop, and additional parking. The Gardentime family is growing too, with their daughter Alicia joining to help with marketing. With a gleam in her eye, Philly sums it up, “It feels like a great privilege to do what we do in a place we love - here’s to another 20 years.”
