COOKBOOKTOBER IS HERE! T
he race is on for the top slot in the Christmas cook book market – the big names are jostling around on
the shelves and there’s no shortage of variety, themes and ideas. As ever we are all looking for something to make life, meals and cooking simpler, quicker and tastier. New trends continue apace and how to cook with your air-fryer is still a popular subject.

Sharma’s new book Veg-table (published by Chronicle Books). It is a fascinating exploration of over 50 different vegetables with recipes organised by plant family. Not only has the author created the recipes but he also takes the mouthwatering photographs. In his previous life he was a scientist and my food guru (aka Diana Henry) says “he has a great understanding as well as a natural instinct
I’ve been drawn to Bee Wilson’s recently published - The
Secret of Cooking – Recipes for an Easier Life in the Kitchen (Fourth Estate) described as a game-changing cookbook which would be well placed on any kitchen shelf. Chapters with titles like “Cook for the life you have” and “Cut yourself some slack” give you an idea about the book’s contents - it’s not awash with glossy pics but it is full of wise words, wit and helpful tips. She is both an accomplished writer and a champion of home cooks, their challenges and realities. Inside the book you will find an array of varied recipes
lovingly gathered from a wealth of experts, chefs, friends and family as well as from her own kitchen. She dispels myths on the prescriptive perfect meal, aims to release the anxieties of cooking as well as the planning and the food shopping. It’s all about “cracking the code of how to fit cooking into the everyday mess and imperfection of all our lives without it seeming like yet another undoable thing on the to-do list.” She impresses that “there is still magic in the kitchen, if you know where to look” and like me she upholds the firm belief that lemon is an essential ingredient and that “fat plus garlic makes anything taste good.” Between the covers you will find recipes for all and every occasion, food for fiestas and families, learn how to substitute, formulas to live by and my favourite - the delicious orange and cardamom squares – the ultimate sweet recipe with low stress, high pleasure. I’m reliably informed that you can join the ‘Veg Pledge’ this November and raise funds for Cancer Research UK - a great cause and of course we all need new plants in our lives and our diets! If this tempts you why not look out Nik
for what flavours work together” His spice knowledge is encyclopaedic and if you’re looking for vegetables with flavour this is the one for you. I’ll confess that my Instagram feed revolves mainly
around food where beans and pulses are having their day. This is where I’ve hit upon Bold Beans: Recipes to Get Your Pulse Racing written by Bold Beans founder Amelia Christie-Miller and published by Kyle Books. We all know the benefits of upping our bean uptake and this really tries to make it easy, accessible and above all tasty. No dreary hippy fodder here but some delicious, versatile recipes with contributions from chefs such as Anna Jones and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. The book tempts you to transform your Sunday roast with a Crispy Herb Stuffed Chicken with Truffle Beans or why not try the Crispy Beans with Creamed Corn and Jalapeno Salsa – the perfect accompaniment for the autumn season of Strictly. The book and the beans, tick a few boxes - healthy, affordable and good for the planet as well as being (dare I say it) right on trend!
A quick shout out for Food Festival Favourite and local
chef Jane Baxter – she has a new book just about to hit the shelves. Recipes for a Better Menopause (co- written with Dr Federica Amati) and published by Kyle Books is described as a collection of delicious, science- backed recipes to help women combat symptoms of the menopause and boost their long-term health. The subject has garnered much attention recently and combining the science with Jane’s magic the results are sure to be tasty as well as healthy.
