The Royal Dart Youth Sailing Trust celebrates 10 year Anniversary T
he Royal Dart Youth Sailing Trust (RDYST) was estab- lished as a Charitable
Incorporated Organisation (CIO) as part of the 150 year celebra- tions of the Royal Dart Yacht Club in 2016. That year, the Club sponsored some local young people, who would not normally have had the opportunity, to participate in an offshore sail training race from Dartmouth to Portsmouth on the old Brixham trawler ‘Provident’. This was a great success and so the RDYST was set up with the principal aim of providing opportunities for less privileged local school children to participate in water based activities on our beautiful River Dart. Typically, over 300 young girls and boys experience the excitement and beauty of the Dart every year, many for the first time.

weeks in July. Groups of up to 12 Year 6 children are introduced to sailing in the Trust’s Quest dinghies, guided by our team of young instructors under the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme. Approximately 220 children from seven local schools enjoy their first sailing experience; they are encouraged to take the helm and sail the boats themselves under close supervision. Sail Training Yacht Experience Every year, fifteen young adults from Dartmouth Academy Second- ary spend a challenging week away on the sail training yacht ‘Prolific’, travel- ling between various harbours on the UK’s
South Coast. Often in rough con- ditions, the teachers regard this as a valuable team-building exercise and a positive lifechanging event for the participants. Career Opportunities Through Sailing The Career Opportunity Through Sailing (COTS) programme provides opportunities for local children, who would otherwise be unable to do so, to undertake the RYA sailing courses which they will complete over a number of years, opening the way to use these skills as a sum- mer job or for further training for a variety of marine industry careers. Each year, RDYST sponsors 2 or 3 new students to start the programme, as well as those who have started in previous years. Dartmouth Youth Group New in 2025, we started working with local charity the Dartmouth Youth Group. We took out 14 young sailors for several evenings ‘introduction to sailing’ in the Quest dinghies with our qualified instructors. This was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all participants and will be built on in the coming years.
