myself redundant,” he says with a grin. “But everything works better when everyone is fully aware of what’s going on.” Te Dartmouth Orchestra is
currently chamber-sized, but with the flexibility to expand when needed – which it oſten does. “Tat’s quite liberating,” Dave
explains. “You’re not always tied to a full symphonic lineup, but when you bring in extra players it opens up so much more repertoire.” Te orchestra is currently building
towards its upcoming performance at the Dart Music Festival on May 16. Te programme features Bruch’s
Violin Concerto, performed by rising soloist Sophia Jackson of Trinity Laban Conservatoire, alongside Schubert’s Rosamunde Overture and the ever-intriguing Unfinished Symphony. It’s a programme that perfectly
reflects the orchestra’s growing confidence and cohesion. Looking ahead, Dave is keen to
expand the orchestra’s outreach work, particularly in schools. “Tere’s nothing like hearing these
instruments live,” he says. “It can be hugely inspiring.” Ultimately, what Dave and the
players are building in Dartmouth isn’t just an orchestra - it’s a shared musical experience. Tere’s something uniquely pow-
erful about a group of people coming together to create sound in real time:
listening, responding, shaping some- thing fleeting yet meaningful. It’s that sense of connection - between players, between audience and per- formers, and between the music and the moment - that keeps orchestral music so compelling. And as the Dartmouth Orchestra
continues to grow in confidence and ambition, that connection promises to deepen. New players are already coming along and are, of course, made very welcome, said Dave. For audiences, it means polished
performances alive with energy and intent. For players it offers a sense of ownership, of belonging and being part of something bigger than themselves. Which, perhaps, is exactly what
Dave meant all along: the orchestra isn’t just an instrument - it’s a community of musicians coming together to create and share a hugely enjoyable experience. For more information visit
