Enjoy the Season with A
May & June in the Garden
s we move from May into June, the garden truly comes into its own. With longer days, warmer temperatures and everything bursting into flower, it’s one of the most rewarding times to be
outdoors. From the first homegrown harvests to colourful borders buzzing with life, early summer is when all your efforts start to pay off.

May is a busy and important month for planting - as the risk of frost fades, tender plants such as tomatoes, peppers and courgettes can be moved outdoors - just remember to harden them off first. Summer bedding plants can be planted into pots, borders and hanging baskets to add instant colour, with geraniums and petunias perfect for sunny spots, and fuchsias and begonias ideal for shade. It’s also a great time to earth up potatoes, encouraging a bigger and better harvest later on.
Keeping on top of maintenance now will make a big difference as the season progresses - lawns will be growing strongly, so regular mowing and feeding will keep them looking lush. Prune spring-flowering shrubs once they’ve finished blooming, support climbing plants before they get too large, and keep an eye out for early signs of pests and diseases - tackling them early is always best.
By June, the garden is in full swing - it’s warm enough to plant out crops like sweetcorn and basil, and to tie in and care for fast-growing plants such as tomatoes. Containers and hanging baskets will benefit from regular feeding to keep flowers and fruit coming all summer long.
One of the highlights of June is the harvest- early potatoes, fresh let- tuce and the first strawberries can be enjoyed, making all the hard work worthwhile. Regular picking encourages continued cropping, so keep harvesting little and often.
There are still plenty of simple jobs to keep everything looking its best - watering during dry spells, mulching to retain moisture, staking taller plants and deadheading flowers like roses and sweet peas to prolong their display.
