with Gardentime As summer gently gives way to autumn, September is one of the most rewarding months in the garden. The rich colours of late-season flowers are at their best, harvest baskets are filling up, and there’s still plenty of warm sunshine to enjoy outdoors. It’s also the perfect time to prepare your garden for the months ahead while looking forward to the promise of another beautiful spring.
S
eptember is a busy month in the vegetable garden. Keep picking runner and French beans
regularly to encourage even more crops, and pinch out the growing tips of cordon tomatoes so plants focus their energy on ripening the remain- ing fruit. Pumpkins will benefit from a little extra sunshine too – remove any leaves shading the fruits and place them on a slate or piece of wood to keep them clear of damp ground. If your maincrop potatoes are nearly ready, cutting back the foliage a few weeks before lifting can help protect the crop from blight.
Now is also one of the best times of year to plant. Autumn is ideal for planting trees and shrubs, giving roots time to establish before winter arrives. Add instant colour to your garden with cy- clamen, violas and autumn-flowering heathers, while hardy annuals such as cornflowers and poppies can be sown now for spectacular displays next year.
Of course, September also marks one of our favourite times of the gardening calendar – spring bulb season! Our shelves are once again filled with hundreds of varieties, ready to transform your garden next spring. Plant daffodils, crocuses, hya- cinths, snowdrops, muscari, alliums, fritillarias and iris reticulata now for a succession of colour from the first days of the year right through to late spring. Tulips are best planted a little later in autumn, but now is the perfect oppor- tunity to choose your favourites before the most popular varieties disappear.
There are plenty of
other jobs to keep your garden looking its best too.
Continue deadheading roses, dahlias and summer bedding to pro- long flowering, divide overcrowded perennials, begin autumn lawn care, clean out the greenhouse, and raise pots onto feet to improve drainage over winter.
AtGardentime, you’ll find everything you need for the season ahead, from our extensive range of spring bulbs – including our popular Fill-a-Box Daffodils – to autumn bedding plants, trees, shrubs, compost and expert advice from our friendly team. Whether you’re planning next spring’s display or simply looking for inspiration, we’d love to welcome you. And while you’re here, why not enjoy a relaxing coffee or lunch in the Glasshouse Café? September is a wonderful time to visit.
