Magical Mutants The heat and sun has seen a surge in the cricket and grasshopper population over the last couple of months and they are often easier to hear rather than see. Devon is a hotspot for this group of Orthoptera hosting 20 of the UK’s 23 cricket and grasshopper species which thrive in fields, meadows and woodland edges. Most are brown and green but you may be lucky enough to spot a rare pink grasshopper whose colour is caused by a genetic mutation. Unfortunately their colour makes camouflage more difficult so they are more visible to predators making their life expectancy much shorter.
Keep an eye out for Grey Seals and their fluffy white young. It’s pupping season and you may well see a seal pup on its own but this is normal and the mother will normally return to feed it. Please remember to keep your distance and if you have any concerns call British Divers Marine Life Rescue on 01825 765546 or The Seal Project on 07818 034668

Look up … On the 28 August we are expecting to see a partial lunar eclipse from the UK. Set your alarm as it will begin at 3.33am until the maximum of the eclipse at 5.12am, when approximately 90% of the Moon will be in the Earth’s shadow. Don’t forget… the Moon will be increasingly low on the horizon as the eclipse progresses, so you’ll need to find a high point looking to the southwest to get the best view.
