Be Wild@Regatta – Be Part of Dartmouth’s Wilder Future
cross Dartmouth a wild new chapter is unfolding. A growing community
movement is working to make our town the most biodiverse in Britain, creating more space for wildlife and inviting everyone to be part of the journey. It might sound ambitious, but
across our town people are leaving grassy areas to bloom, creating ponds, putting up swiſt boxes, planting for pollinators and making space for the wildlife that shares this beautiful place with us. BeWild is bringing the natural
world back into the conver- sation, and this year BeWild @ Regatta invites you to come along and discover how you too can become part of the BeWild Dart- mouth movement. Join us in Royal
Avenue Gardens from 10am on Saturday 22nd August for a fun, inspiring and hands-on day for all ages, packed with ideas and activities. Could your garden become part
of a Hedgehog Highway, allowing one of Britain’s favourite mam- mals to move safely through our neighbourhood? Could your street become Dartmouth’s next Swiſt Street, creating safe places for these remarkable birds to nest and flour- ish? Or perhaps you’ll decide to let part of your lawn grow long, cre- ating another piece in Dartmouth’s
growing patchwork of urban meadows that support bees, butterflies and the incredible insects that, in turn, support so much of our wildlife. Troughout the day there will be
plenty to get involved with. Help create a beautiful woven willow sculpture that will become a home for hedgehogs, insects and birds before being placed within our community for everyone to enjoy. Discover how to make your own moth trap and pre- pare to be amazed by the hidden jewels that visit aſter dark. Take part in our family-friendly wildlife activi- ties, learn how to identify the wildlife around us and find out how you
can contribute your
sightings to the Great South Hams Bioblitz. You’ll also be able to
decorate your own Garden Heart to display proud- ly in your garden as a celebration of what you’re already doing, or what you hope to do, for wildlife in Dartmouth. Add your own garden, balcony, allot- ment or green space to the grow- ing BeWild Dartmouth Map and become part of a community-wide
network of people creating more space for
nature. Te event is also an opportunity
to discover the remarkable local businesses that are already champi- oning biodiversity. From sponsoring swiſt boxes in our church towers to raising money for woodland con- servation through beautiful silver acorn pendants, businesses across Dartmouth are proving that nature can thrive when an entire commu- nity gets behind it. You’ll find simple, practical ideas
to take home too. See examples of mini wildlife ponds, bug habitat tee- pees and plants that provide nectar, berries and seed heads throughout the seasons. Whether you have a tiny courtyard, a large garden or a window box, you’ll leave with ideas that can help you make your green space make a difference. Nature restoration doesn’t belong
somewhere else, it starts right here, where we live and work. Come along, get inspired, get involved and help shape a wilder future
for Dartmouth. Together, we
can create a town where wildlife flourishes, com- munities connect and every garden,
business and green space becomes part of something extraordinary.•
