SUSTAINABILITY
Navigating net zero
Emma Gregory, External Communications Manager, BASF plc
Climate protection is one of the most urgent challenges facing society. As a significant emitter of greenhouse gases, the chemical industry recognises the importance of accelerating actions to protect the climate for future generations. Like many in the industry, BASF is committed to reaching net zero by 2050 but the transition to climate neutrality is complex and will require changes along the value chain.
It is with this in mind that colleagues from BASF in UK & Ireland developed a series of events they called ‘Navigating Net Zero’. Darren Budd, Commercial Director, BASF UK & Ireland explains, “BASF’s ambition is to be the preferred chemical company to enable our customers’ green transformation. We recognise that reaching net zero is a difficult task and one that can only be achieved through collaboration. We wanted to design a platform where we could bring expert voices into the room to help others in our industry work out how to start their Net Zero journey. We held our first event in March 2023, inviting around 40 participants who were keen to gain insights, receive practical advice and share experiences. It proved to us that there was great interest from our customers and a sense of urgency surrounding the topic of climate action among stakeholders in the industry, which encouraged us to hold repeat events and widen the audience.” This initial session brought together a diverse group of experts from both industry and government to share their knowledge and experiences. Speakers and panellists from a variety of organisations were joined by a representative from the then Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Building on the success of the first event, the team organised a follow-up gathering in November 2023, this time focusing specifically on Scope 3 emissions,
a topic that had emerged as one that instilled a significant level of uncertainty in customers, peers and colleagues alike. BASF had announced their commitment to targets for Scope 3.12
emissions
in December 2022 and shared the organisation’s goals with participants. In addition to the targets for reducing their emissions from production (Scope 1) and the purchase of energy (Scope 2),1
a new target
was set for the purchase of raw materials (Scope 3.1)2
in 2023. Darren Budd explains, “We have also added Scope 3.1 emissions to our Net Zero target for greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. As part of this target, we are working to strengthen sustainability in our supply chains and use resources more responsibly.”
At the second event, over 100 participants exchanged thoughts into various aspects of carbon management, including data collection and carbon accounting. The rich agenda also included discussions on Product Carbon Footprints and strategies for reducing transport emissions. Industry and Sustainability experts were invited to present case studies and attendees were able to take part in open, meaningful and
