Championing lubricant standards – the role of VLS

Andrew Goddard, Chairman, Verification of Lubricant Specifications

In January 2017, VLS embarked upon a comprehensive trade campaign to raise awareness of its work and the vital role it plays in the lubricants industry. Following its formation in 2014, VLS has and continues to investigate product complaints and takes action where necessary to address and uphold standards within the sector. As the third anniversary approached, VLS members were keen to take the next step in engaging garages, workshops and the trade, along with end users about VLS’s role to protect and educate end users, in championing lubricant standards in the industry.

Since then, VLS has consistently invested its time and resources in engaging the trade press, developing relationships with key journalists and influencers in the aftermarket media with which to influence end users and consumers. By proactively providing interesting and relevant news and insight, VLS has been able to feature in many publications regarding oils and lubricants, raise awareness of different lubricant standards and highlight the importance to end users of matching the right lubricant with the right application.

Over the past 12 months alone, VLS has contributed to a wide range of aftermarket publications for both passenger and commercial vehicles as the voice of lubricant standards, including: - Lube magazine (Worldwide) - Lubes’n’Greases EMEA - Professional Motor Mechanic (UK)

40 LUBE MAGAZINE NO.157 JUNE 2020

- Commercial Vehicle Workshop (UK) - Aftermarket (UK) - CAT (UK) - Professional Motor Factor (UK) - FACTS (UK) - Scots Auto Scene (UK) - Autotechnician (UK) - Garage (UK) - Autorepair Focus (UK) - Transport Operator (UK) - Transport Engineer (UK)

VLS regularly reports on a wide range of issues affecting the industry, reflecting how the lubricants sector is adapting to embrace these challenges as the voice of authority in these matters. Recent articles include the impact of the increasing use of biofuels, the ageing car parc, winter oil requirements, counterfeit oils, electric vehicles, the EU Green Deal and the complex task of identifying the correct lubricant, as well as case reports and subsequent policy changes by ATIEL, the European Lubricant Technical Association.

From September 2019 – March 2020 alone, VLS appeared in 23 articles in print and online, supported by 11 adverts, in 14 different on and offline publications. These publications reached an audience of well over 200,000 people working in the automotive industry on both passenger and commercial vehicles, including garages, mechanics, motor factors and fleet operators.
