The number of domestic players rose to take 35% market share with international players holding 40% of the market, and the region is dependent upon foreign investors. By 2017 the market across all four CEE countries recovered to 2009 levels but are still not at pre economic recession levels.


Today the market size overall, of all four countries, is smaller than that of Italy but the fifth largest in Europe at a combined 359,000 metric tonnes. Approximately 55% of the market is given to Industrial applications across all CEE countries, and 45% to commercial and passenger vehicle applications.


MOL-Lub is the market leader in the region at 12% share followed by Total at 9%, then Paramo and Castrol at 7% each. Following this both Shell and Mobil hold a 6% share with five other companies including Lukoil holding between 1 and 2% share respectively.


In terms of lubricant producers in the region, Hungary’s MOL Lub produces around 68,000 metric tonnes, the Czech Republic’s Paramo around 28,000 metric tonnes, Romania’s Lukoil 17,000 metric tonnes and Croatia’s INA Maziva 12,000 metric tonnes. Many are producing Group I and MOL-Lub are the market leader in industry and food production lubricants. Group II, III and IV are imported into the region from the USA, Europe and Asia.


The main challenge for the region that lies ahead is to develop the market fir superior Group II, III and IV products to enhance automotive, commercial and industrial applications whilst developing regional capacity and capability to become more self-sufficient in the domestic supply of these advanced products.
