transmission specialists such as ZF, and for engines such as the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) and the American Petroleum Institute (API). Whilst certain OEM specifications are officially obsolete, the equipment’s typically longer lifetime still sees many of them requested in the lubricant market place. With such a diverse range of requirements still expected, care is needed where fluid misapplication could result in a lessening of the ultimate serviceable life of the equipment, as well as diminished performance features such as driver comfort, acceleration and operation.

In common with other equipment markets globally, while certain brands have remained standalone such as John Deere, there has been some consolidation of OEMs through groups such as AGCO which includes amongst others Massey Ferguson, Fendt and Valtra, with a growing presence of others from emerging markets such as India’s Mahindra. In fact, when market share is measured in terms of units rather than value, Mahindra would be seen to be the global leader.

Agricultural machinery will inevitably continue to evolve and given the significant investment by the agricultural industry, today’s top of the range tractors can cost over £200,000 and implements such as power harrows in excess of £25,000, the use of the correct fluids is essential especially to preserve warranty integrity for the owner.

In conclusion, the trend has been, and continues to be that where historically multiple machines would perform different tasks nowadays one larger modern unit is often used exclusively across all activities. This makes any potential unplanned downtime of huge significance especially in an industry that is often heavily reliant on the weather.

The formulation and use of the highly specialised fluids to maintain and protect this sophisticated equipment has never been more important both now and into the future.
