butylene), hydrocarbon gases (ethylene, propylene), natural gases (methane, ethane), petroleum gases (propane, butane), air, cryofluids (Helium Hydrogen), and CO². These types of lubricants support high temperature applications and support no sludge and deposits in application, provide extended drain intervals and are less soluble with some gases.

Ester-based compressor oils are compatible with natural gases (methane, ethane), air, catalyst (used in refineries), and support high temperature applications while protecting against sludge and deposits. PAO-based compressor oils are compatible with natural gases (methane, ethane) and air, support high temperature and high pressure applications and provide extended drain intervals in excess of 8000 hours.

Figure 1.

A comparison of air compressor lubricant technology is given in Figure 1.

Adding further challenges, the selection of lubricant can be different depending on the type of gases you compress as solubility of those gases to each lubricant is different. You may find PAG based compressor lubricants for hydrocarbon gases like LNG or for hyper compressors to produce Low-density Polyethylene (LDPE) with different viscosity and performance claim. For other gases using PAO based lubricants could be the best choice.

Overall compressor applications could benefit from the application of synthetic lubricants using PAG, PAO or Ester base oil, however care must be taken to ensure the right lubricant type is matched to the right application.
