RYANAIR SLAMS EUROPE’S AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL

RYANAIR HAS BLAMED issues with Europe’s air traffic control for delaying one-fifth of its flights during the month of September. The airline said 92 per cent of its flights arrived on time in September, excluding air traffic control delays, up from 89 per cent in September last year. However, it claimed air traffic control shortages and disruptions “continue to have a large impact on punctuality”, saying one-fifth of its services – 15,455 flights – were delayed as a result. It named the UK, Germany, France and Spain as “the worst ATC providers in September”. A recent study of flight data showed 11.5 million UK passengers were impacted by delays last summer. Meanwhile, research by IATA found delays caused by air traffic control issues, such as staff shortages and strikes, more than doubled in the year to summer 2018, with the average delay per flight in July that year hitting 20 minutes. In addition to its on-time performance, Ryanair

reported an average of 67g of CO2 per passenger per kilometre for September, which it claimed makes it “Europe’s greenest/cleanest major airline with the youngest fleet and highest load factors”.

‘NDC milestone’ for CWT

CWT HAS REVEALED it has made its first successful live NDC booking through Amadeus Selling Platform Connect. The ticket, issued on American Airlines, was done in an actual production environment, according to the travel management platform, and comes after Amadeus announced the addition of NDC connectivity to its Level 4 certified solution that has the ability to shop, book, pay and service tickets. Erik Magnuson, vice-president of air distribution

capabilities, commented: “This is a tremendous milestone in the NDC journey and is an early stage indicator of what can be achieved with industry and technology cooperation. “While this is a hugely positive step forward to

making efficient NDC consumption a reality for the business traveller, it is still early days. We need to continue to collaborate as an industry.” n Is 2020 the year of NDC? p82-85
