eing used to the sunnier climes of Australia, the purchase of a dark and run-down three-storey Victorian mid-terraced house in north London, came with one fi rm condition: increase the natural light. This was key to Jo Mast, when
she and husband Robert bought the property in Queen’s Park, north London two years ago, keen to fi nd a renovation project. “We’d looked at lots of houses which had already been remodelled, but not in a way which suited us,” Jo explains. “That would have meant redoing a lot of the work, which made no sense – we’d decided we’d be better off starting from scratch.” Aſt er living in a fl at in Maida Vale, Jo, a product director at a technology company, and Robert, who works in fi nance, also wanted more space and a garden. The chosen property also had to be good for family life and have enough room for when Jo’s family come to visit from Australia. “We found this house and I did my research and looked at the local planning register, so I had a good idea that we could add on an extra room as part of the existing loſt conversion within permitted development rules,” she says. “It was perfect.” Aſt er getting the keys, Jo used her research to fi nd building
fi rm Extend, who had worked on other houses in the area. “I wanted to fi nd a company who knew the local rules and would be able to make the whole process run smooth,” she explains. The builder in turn suggested EMR Architecture to design and manage the project. Jo and Robert met director Emilie Mauran and went to see some of her work. “We liked her designs immediately and saw eye to eye on style,” Jo remembers. “Also, with my upbringing, I wanted to introduce lots of light into the house, which felt quite dark and gloomy.
