KNOW HOW l KBB
In a bedroom, shutters provide an ideal solution – filtering in light, while keeping an element of privacy when needed. These Elm full-height designs cost from £299 per sq m, from Shutterly Fabulous.
LET IN THE LIGHT Although we’ve been programmed to think of dark, cocooning rooms as the ideal sleep zone, in actual fact a calming scheme should be designed to let in as much light as possible (aside from when you’re actually going to bed, of course). Airy spaces with plenty of natural illumination play a big part in how we feel, whatever time of year, as the correct levels of sun at the start of the day may make getting up that little bit easier. Use fi ltered light window dressings, blackout blinds, or sheers to suit your needs and even consider a design that can be programmed to open and close automatically in line with your routine. Also think about other forms of illumination – you may need a bright main light for getting dressed, but for reading in bed, a task lamp or dimmable switch will suffi ce. Make this practical by asking your electrician to include switches by the bed, so you don’t have to get up to turn the lights off . Get the light right, and it will help you unwind at night and invigorate you in the morning.
Old meets new These patterned tiles,
freshly launched by Devol, are created by pressing old remnants of beautiful vintage lace into clay. Rose Flemish
metro tile, £10 each.
All aboard
Swoon is the latest brand to take inspiration from the London Underground with the launch of furniture inspired by the Tube. My favourite is the Keffi sideboard, shown here in brass and China blue, £649.
USE PATTERN FOR INTEREST There’s nothing to say a calming bedroom can’t feature lots of pattern – and if used well, it won't feel too busy or detract from the overall serene feel. The trick is to keep it tonal, so sticking to the same colour palette and layering shades to keep your scheme feeling cohesive, tranquil, and – most of all – interesting and inviting.
This bedroom features various patterns, from the wallpaper to the rug, the cushions and the marble fireplace surround – all in a neutral colour palette. Lauderdale wallpaper in Stone, £87 per roll, Little Greene. Beni Ourain rug, £800, Tate and Darby. The Ticking bedlinen, from a selection at Toast, starts from £89 for a double duvet dover.

Pink kitchens One emerging look I'm loving is pink cabinetry. Symphony's Dusky Pink colour, shown here on its Alta range, is one of a few kitchens I've spotted lately in this shade and it's one that really caught my eye.
