KBB l PROJECT PLANNER APPLIANCE FOCUS

A piece of kitchen kit that tops many wishlists, the latest designs not only offer flexibility, ample space and smart tech, but come in a range of styles, sizes and colours, too Words: Sally Smith

RANGE COOKERS

What are they?

Combining a hob and a mix of ovens in a single freestanding appliance, range cookers come in an array of colours and sizes – think everything from 50cm to 2m wide, as well as bespoke configurations. There are three fuel options: electric, gas, or dual-fuel, which combines the two. In addition to hobs and ovens, some models also offer wok stations, griddles, separate grills, plate warming drawers, adjustable shelving racks, or even Japanese-style teppanyaki plates. What also makes them unique is the range of oven configurations available – some offer up to four separate cavities, from tall fan ovens with multiple shelves to smaller warming ones, with overall cooking capacities of up to 200 litres. A few of the latest models also include a steam oven matching any combination designs on the market. All in all, a range cooker is one of the most multi-functional appliances.

Why have one? If the kitchen is the hub of your home and you enjoy cooking, a range will provide you with all the options you’ll need to prepare a huge selection of dishes. The separate ovens can be used independently of each other at the same time and at different temperatures, so you can have multiple dishes on the go. “The versatility and convenience of a range cooker is unbeatable,” says Ricky Davies, director

at Sub-Zero & Wolf UK. “They can simmer, saute, griddle, roast, bake, oven grill, prove dough, dehydrate herbs, and bake authentic pizzas and artisans breads at the same time in one single appliance.” The latest models also offer touch controls and up to 11 pre-set cooking programmes.

Function A dual-fuel range cooker is a flexible and comprehensive appliance and more energy efficient than you would expect. There has been an increase in demand for electric models that run off a standard 13amp plug and include the latest hobs, too. “The next generation of induction range cookers includes a bridging area that can be used as two separate cooking zones or combined to accomodate large pots or pans,” adds Emma Cowley, brand manager at Rangemaster. “Some models include an induction compatible griddle too.” Plenty of range cookers are rated A for energy efficiency, making them a reliable eco friendly option for your kitchen.

Buying tips Take some time to see and touch a good variety of range cookers to understand what configurations will suit you. The size depend on your space and budget, but don’t forget that there are plenty of colours to choose from. “With the kitchen now providing both a social and functional space, many of us are increasingly

INSIDER TIP Extraction is crucial, so factor this into your range cooker placement. A chimneybreast is an ideal location, for example

looking for a striking appliance,” says Maurizio Severgnini, managing director at Bertazzoni UK & Ireland. “A colourful range cooker will complement worktops and bespoke cabinetry,” Look out for showrooms that hold demonstrations to see the appliance in use before you buy.

Maintenance advice Don’t be put off by the size of a range cooker when it comes to keeping it clean. There are plenty of removable parts such as hob burners, pan supports, and shelves which you can easily take out and put in the dishwasher. Look out for ovens with catalytic liners – these panels absorb and break down food and grease, which burns away during cooking. A pyrolytic self- cleaning programme available on some models also burns away dirt and grease at temperatures over 400˚C. However, the outside of the oven can get very hot so keep away while it’s running this cycle.

“ If you enjoy cooking, a range will provide the options needed to prepare a selection of dishes.”

Costs A range cooker is an investment so expect to spend between £4000 and £5000 for a standard-sized 90cm-wide design. Lower cost designs are available with basic functions. If you want to buy a truly stunning one made to your configurations, you can pay up to £20,000 or more.
