KNOW HOW l KBB
BRING IN NATURAL TOUCHES Take a leaf from biophilic design – a principle stating that our homes should have a connection to nature to encourage a sense of serenity. You can do this by looking at the materials you choose for furniture, using colours that emulate those from outside, and introducing plants that evoke a sense of calm. Organic materials such as wood, natural fibres, and sisal are ideal for bed frames and headboards, wardrobes and rugs, while colours such as soft greens and earthy hues can make all the difference to how your room feels.
Wooden legs on the bed frame, the nightstand and cladded walls all give a nod to nature in this space, while a small plant helps breathe life and colour into the room. Cavendish bed in grey velvet, £899 for a double; Duo stool in grey velbet and brass, £99; and Median bedside table in walnut, £199, all Dwell.
STEER CLEAR OF TECHNOLOGY It’s not only clearing the clutter that will help your bedroom feel calm – technology that takes up attention is another big no-no, whether it’s our mobile phones on charge, a TV, or even laptops. When we bring our daily tasks to bed, it disturbs our ability to work and sleep efficiently. The blue light from screens causes a change to the circadian rhythm, which tricks our brains into thinking that it’s not yet time to sleep. If you simply can’t live without a bit of Saturday-morning TV or a late-night film, however, it’s worth investing in a storage solution that can hide your screen when not in use, keeping your room distraction free. For charging, consider plugs in a bedside cabinet so you can still power up your gadgets but keep them out of sight.
left Mongolian sheepskin cushion in Putty, £60; washed cotton bedspread in Plaster, £80; rattan bed frame, £599 for a double; Skye curtains, £180 for a 228cm x 228cm design, all John Lewis & Partners.
PLAY WITH TEXTURE If the maximalist in you just can’t bear the idea of
a plain bedroom, then we’d suggest you get your fix by injecting it with plenty of texture to create a calming feel. Adding lots of layers, especially when it comes to your bedding, is a great way to mix different materials together. Start with natural linens or Egyptian cotton for bedding, then add throws and a bedspread for a cosy place you can’t wait to sink into. Add a rug, curtains and soſt furnishings, and you’ll help to satisfy your craving for ‘more’ without overdoing it.
