PROJECT PLANNER l KBB DRAWING BOARD

James Barrow at Schmidt Kitchens in Bristol and KSL’s designer Rebecca Brown help a couple create their dream master bedroom and ensuite in a renovated family home

Words: Rachel Ogden

THE CLIENT IT delivery lead Bob Atwal, 40, and his

wife Daljit, 37, a retail assistant, bought a 1930s property in Derbyshire in August 2019, intending to gut and extend it to turn it into a family home. They have two children, Karun, 10, and Jaya, eight. As part of the whole-house renovation, they’re creating a master bedroom with a dressing space and an ensuite.

THE SPACE The wall for the ensuite has been

moved 1.4m into the bedroom, creating a 3.27m-wide space. The dressing room would measure 5.38 x 2.5m, leaving an area for the master bedroom that’s 4.05 x 5.38m. However, the ceiling is lower at one side of the space because it slopes for 75cm towards the window – making it 2.3m instead of 2.5m high.

THE PLANS

1 Dressing room A block wall has been constructed to partition this area off , which means the new space has no windows. 2 Heating The couple would like a radiator in the master suite and have proposed placing it against the dressing room wall. 3 Lighting The ensuite will block one of the bedroom’s windows, plus a third existing window will become a wall, so the new scheme will require extra lighting. 4 Entrance A parallel partition wall to the ensuite creates a landing area between the master bedroom and a new guest bedroom.

THE BRIEF 1

The proposed layout, with the dressing room at the rear and ensuite next to the entrance, means the new space’s plumbing can be shared with an adjacent bathroom.

Bob and Daljit think features such as a statement

headboard, divan bed, low hanging pendants or wall lights with bedside storage, would work well in the new space.

The couple would like the three areas to work seamlessly

together, and for there to be a minimum of clutter. The dressing room should also coordinate with the bedroom scheme.
