KBB l PROJECT PLANNER BUYERS’ GUIDE
BATHROOM TAPS W
Why not update your space with one of the latest designs? With such a vast range of fi nishes and colours, you’ll be spoilt for choice Words: Sally Smith
hether you are creating a new bathroom or simply want to revamp your current look with a few modern details, choosing a new tap is a
good place to start. There are plenty of designs on the market from contemporary single mixers to more traditional pillar designs with separate spouts for hot and cold water and industrial- style wall-mounted ones created for countertop basins – and that’s only for starters. You can pick taps with lever or cross-top handles, while some hi-tech models include clever dials to adjust the temperature. There is also an impressive choice of metal fi nishes on off er, from brushed nickel, copper, or chrome to satin brass with ceramic levers or matt white and black to suit any décor. If you really want to go all out for a glamorous spa feel, why not invest in a waterfall tap where the water fl ows down a channel, creating a mini water feature into your basin?
Buying tips If you are designing a new bathroom, start by deciding which basin and tap fi t the décor and layout of the scheme – maybe a countertop design and wall-mounted fi xture would be ideal? However, if you’re not replacing the basin you will be restricted by the number of existing tap
holes – if there is only one, a monobloc mixer is your only option. Remember the size, height and reach will need to work with the basin, too.
Design decisions It’s important to bear other elements such as towel rails or shelf brackets in mind when picking a tap. It will need to work with other brassware, too, so include a range of styles, colours and fi nishes on your moodboard to be sure you make the right choice. If you plan on mixing and matching, stick to the same shapes so there’s still some cohesion. Coloured taps come in an array of diff erent fi nishes that will add a focal point.
Pricing You can fi nd a monobloc tap in matt black for around £200, but if you want a designer-inspired wall-mounted fi xture, expect to pay more than £1,000. It might be worth buying a complete brassware set to get better value for money.
Roper Rhodes’ Keswick mono basin mixer tap, £160, mixes contemporary and traditional styles by combining a modern spout with heritage-inspired ceramic lever handles.
