EDITOR’S COMMENT LIFE IS A

ROLLERCOASTER

ith infl ation at its highest level for 40 years and consumer confi dence plummeting to its lowest level on record, according to recent data from GfK, you’d be forgiven for fearing the worst. But what does all of that actually mean for the UK KBB industry and, specifi cally, independent retailers? With many pundits predicting big-ticket items could be hit hard, are

kitchens and

bathrooms really going to be a casualty of the faltering economy or are they sheltered from the effects as they are known to add signifi cantly to the resale value of a property? See our analysis [pages 38-40] on the state of the market and predictions for the year ahead from industry experts. With the future looking – at least on the face of it – so uncertain and issues within the supply chain still causing logistical headaches for retailers, it’s perhaps no surprise to hear many studios considering a move to new supply partnerships. But, as retail consultant Toby Griffi n points out in our shopfl oor analysis on choosing the right supplier [pages 48-52], while changing or adding suppliers can allow you to respond and adapt to changing situations, the grass is not always greener on the other side, and the decision should not be taken lightly. Talking of suppliers, this month we chat to Dominic Worsley [pages 34-36], the new MD of CDA, about his plans for the appliance brand. While he may be new to CDA, he’s certainly not new to the industry, having been in the domestic appliances sector since 1999, with the exception of a stint at Disney. Continuing the theme of supply, we also speak with two familiar

faces from the bathroom industry – Steve Lee and Dean Stokes – about their plans for artisan shower enclosure brand Aqata and, specifi cally, what those plans mean for its retail network. We also hear from the founders of Hackney-based retail studio Holte

[pages 76-78], about their mission to educate consumers, and the wider industry, on sustainability through design.

As always, your feedback on these and any other topic covered in the issue is always welcome.
