NEW TECH AND AI WITH BELL TRAINING ACADEMY
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has touched every industry, and the helicopter industry is no different. Bell is adding to its team with product support engineering to help translate data sets. Bell is augmenting the data sets they’ve had for decades, and AI is the whiz kid to “translate it into a customer solution,” Schaefer says. AI is also helping with behind-the-scenes systems for supply chain management and logistics.
Bell Training Center Manager Patricia Charcos is heading up their European infrastructure in Valencia, Spain. Bell’s 10-year- old location there provides instruction across Europe. She said they are using a mix of virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality in their training sessions. She emphasized the benefits of using it for pilots in a training center rather than in the sky.
Regarding training for mechanics, she said they provide dedicated aircraft for hands-on training. Schaefer said they’ve played around with Microsoft’s VR goggles. Still, for now, the
customers and CSCs who’ve sampled it said it’s easier to use traditional communication, which they are now doing by texting with cell data and a text photo to a CSC.
They also offer TRU Simulation. TRU Simulation + Training Inc. (an affiliate of Bell Textron Inc.) developed the Veris VR Simulator. The device is qualified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a Level 7 flight training device (FTD). Level 7 FTD is the highest fidelity standard for helicopters, where the FTD delivers exceptional realism in visual systems, motion, flight dynamics and all system modeling, replicating real-world scenarios with high accuracy. In addition, the Veris enables pilots to train for a wide range of system malfunctions and emergency procedures, ensuring comprehensive preparedness for real-world operations.
Schaefer spoke about the Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) and whether it is now tied to AI, but he said it is still “old-school math” in his mind and that monitoring data on the aircraft is still a “fairly traditional algorithm.”
