Why England and Wales lead the world in home oxygen safety

Research has revealed only one recorded fatality from home oxygen fires in England and Wales between 2013 and 2017. Firebreaks - which stop the oxygen flow in the event of a fire in the tubing - were developed by medical gas solutions manufacturer, BPR Medical, and became mandatory in the UK in 2006. The findings suggest that their use, alongside patient education and risk assessments, can dramatically reduce patient deaths. They contrast starkly with data from the US, where patients are twenty times more likely to die in a home oxygen fire, and Japan, where the risk is ten times greater.

Health authorities in the US and Japan – and across the world - are taking steps to introduce firebreaks. The list of countries that have mandated their use, are governed by regulations for fitting them, or where service providers install them as ‘best practice’, now exceeds forty.

BPR Medical is launching a new report in September on the scale of oxygen fires in the US, which has long been underreported. The company also conducted a FOI request in England and Wales that showed that there was only one death from home oxygen fires in England between 2013 and 2017, way lower than the US or Japan. Japan is making firebreaks mandatory in 2021 and in the US, the Veterans Health Administration mandated them for its 85,000 home oxygen patients in 2018. According to BPR Medical, there is a definite momentum behind the adoption of these important safety devices, with the UK leading the way in best practice. Visit the UK Pavilion to find out more.
